Palynology and meiotic behavior of Genipa americana L., a species native to the Amazon

Genipa americana L., commonly known as genipap, belongs to the Rubiaceae family. This study aimed describe pollen morphology of species, evaluate its meiotic behavior and viability, provide information help maintenance conservation species in natural habitat. Flower buds were collected from 20 individuals Alta Floresta Matupá municipalities, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Pollen was characterized using acetolysis compared existing literature. Meiotic post-meiotic phases analyzed 2% acetocarmine stain, viability estimated Sudan IV, Alexander's Lugol's solution (1%), stain. G. has medium-sized, 3-colporate with reticulated exine few irregularities. Acetocarmine stain showed highest mean percentage (97.96%). Stain tests revealed significant differences, indicating high regularity. However, recovery degraded areas are still necessary there is no guarantee successful reproduction due factors associated fragmentation, genetic drift, reduced gene flow, inbreeding.
